Discover the beauty of the Teatro Municipale di Piacenza
The Teatro Municipale di Piacenza is a beautiful gem of late 18th-century architecture. It was opened on September 10, 1804, with a performance of Zamori, ossia l’Eroe delle Indie, a serious opera by Giovanni Simone Mayr.
The theater was designed by the architect Lotario Tomba and built in the shape of a three-quarter ellipse. This shape was an innovation that revolutionized theater architecture in Europe, which had previously been based on the U- or horseshoe-shaped auditoriums. The three-quarter ellipse shape provides excellent acoustics and also gives the auditorium an elegant, elongated appearance.
The interior of the theater is decorated in a neoclassical style. The walls are painted with frescoes, and the ceiling is decorated with a dome. The theater also has a large chandelier made of crystal.
The Teatro Municipale di Piacenza has hosted a variety of famous artists over the years, including Giuseppe Verdi, Arturo Toscanini, and Maria Callas. It is also home to the Orchestra Giovanile “Luigi Cherubini”, which is conducted by Riccardo Muti.
The theater is a popular tourist destination, and it is also used for a variety of events, including concerts, operas, and ballets.

Piazza Cavalli Piacenza
The people of Piacenza call them “i noss cavaj” (our horses) and consider them the symbol of the city. They are the two equestrian statues of the Farnese family, sculpted in bronze by the Tuscan Francesco Mochi in 1620 and the reason for the name of the most “salon” square in Piacenza. The statue of Ranuccio, the commissioner, is more static and composed, dressed as a valiant Roman with armor and skirt, while the statue of his father Alessandro, an audacious warrior depicted riding a dashing steed with his mane in the wind, is more lively and dynamic. Together with the Gothic Palace, an example of Lombard civil architecture from 1281 in two colors (in light Verona marble the arcaded loggia on the ground floor, intended for popular meetings, in red bricks the upper floor, decorated with Ghibelline battlements and gigantic polyfores), they give personality and character to the square. In the background, the 17th-century Collegio dei Mercanti faces the long, neo-classical Palazzo del Governatore (1787).
Il Duomo di Piacenza
The Duomo of Piacenza, is a unique building in the context of Italian ecclesiastical architecture. It was built between the 12th and 13th centuries and is one of the most important examples of Lombard Romanesque architecture. The façade is decorated with sculptures of saints and biblical figures, and the interior is home to a number of important works of art, including a painting of the Madonna and Child by Antonio da Correggio.
The most attractive feature of the Duomo is its façade. It is divided vertically by two semi-columns and decorated with three portals, each with a portico on two levels. The wall surface is clad with pink Verona marble, which gives the façade a warm and inviting appearance. The rose window, the gallery under the eaves of the spire, and the two medians above the smaller porticos lighten the front and add to its beauty.
The interior of the Duomo is also impressive. It is in the shape of a Latin cross, with three naves in the longitudinal body and in the transept. The elevated presbytery is divided into three naves with as many apses, of which the central one is much more projecting than the two smaller lateral ones. The division of the presbytery is given by the extension beyond the transept of the side naves of the longitudinal body.
The Duomo of Piacenza is a must-see for anyone interested in Italian architecture.

La Via Francigena
Located in the extreme west of Emilia-Romagna, Piacenza borders the provinces of Cremona, Genoa, Lodi, Pavia and Parma and is in a context of strategic road, motorway and railway junctions in northern Italy. Piacenza, a place of passage and transit by antonomasia, at the crossroads of four regions, is located on the right bank of the Po river, near the confluence of the Trebbia river and along the Via Francigena. It is a welcoming and hospitable city: as early as the 15th century, there were up to thirty hostels for travelers.
In the 17th century, it is also remembered, in the diaries of passing travelers, as the “red city”, for the characteristic color of the bricks of the numerous noble palaces, austere on the outside but sumptuous and celebratory on the inside, testimony to a strong and jealous local nobility of its privileges. In the ancient medieval city, the streets intersect at right angles according to the ancient Roman-era scheme, a testament to the colony founded in 218 BC in a pleasant and pleasant place from which the name derives.
Passing along the main state roads in Piacenza means retracing two of the most important Roman roads: Via Emilia, built in 187 BC between Rimini and Piacenza, and Via Postumia, built in 148 BC to connect the Ligurian Sea (Genoa) with the upper Adriatic (Aquileia). The Romea road par excellence, Via Emilia, corresponds to Via Francigena, at least as far as the main branch is concerned.
